Miami car rental for international drivers
Age, foreign-license review, insurance, security holds and pickup: how international visitors can prepare for a Miami car rental.
Privately Known
International visitors can ask to rent a Miami car, but driving eligibility, the license and insurance arrangement must be approved before handover. Start with the car, dates, driver age and license-issuing country—not identity documents in a general inquiry. A quote or inquiry does not reserve a car or approve a route.
Requirements checked 30 October 2026 (Miami/Eastern time) against our published Miami booking terms and the linked car pages. These are contractual booking requirements, not a statement of Florida law. Confirm the terms for your selected car and any provider-specific requirements before paying.
How old must an international driver be?
Drivers are normally 21 or older. Drivers aged 18 to 20 are sometimes approved on request, never anyone younger. Ask us before booking. A young-driver fee of $299 (ages 21 to 24) or $499 (approved drivers aged 18 to 20) applies once per rental for each driver under 25. These age rules apply to additional drivers too; approval for an 18–20-year-old is case by case, not guaranteed by payment of a fee.
Can I use my foreign license, and do I need an IDP?
Tell the team the country that issued your license and ask them to confirm its acceptance for the chosen car. An International Driving Permit (IDP) or translation may need review; we do not publish a universal IDP requirement or a list of automatically accepted countries. Have the team confirm the documents for your particular license before travel.
Our published Miami terms require the driver’s license front and back, plus a passport when the license was issued outside the United States, before keys are handed over. A passport establishes identity; it does not replace license or insurance approval. The team also requires the insurance declarations page (all pages), a credit card in the renter’s name and the signed rental agreement.
What if my insurance does not cover this rental?
The team checks the policy for the named driver, selected vehicle, rental dates and applicable coverage. A foreign policy, card benefit or travel policy is not automatically accepted as usable rental insurance. If you cannot supply a usable declarations page, say so at the inquiry stage and ask about an alternative before committing to the car.
The insurance guide explains existing-policy verification and the separate Inuity advisor-assisted route for international visitors or renters without usable insurance. Eligibility, limits, exclusions, price and activation must be confirmed for the actual renter and vehicle; an inquiry does not activate coverage. Contractual waivers are not primary insurance. All-In combines Prepaid Fuel, Loss of Use Waiver and Wheel/Door/Windshield Waiver; it does not include rental insurance, primary liability or international insurance.
Review the distinction before selecting protection:
Can another person drive the car?
Additional drivers are free to add, but each must be named on the rental agreement and pass the same license and insurance checks before driving. The applicable young-driver fee still applies once per rental for each driver under 25. Ask whether each driver needs to attend handover; sharing the car does not itself authorize another driver.
What payment and security hold should I plan for?
For a license issued outside the United States, the published security hold is $5,000; All-In does not reduce it. This is separate from the rental charge and the booking payment. A credit card in the renter’s name is required. Confirm the card’s suitability, available authorization capacity and the hold arrangements with the team through approved verification—not by sending card details in an inquiry.
50% of the rental total secures your booking and is non-refundable if you cancel. The balance is due before pickup. This is a payment toward the rental, not an extra security deposit. If you cancel, we keep the 50% booking payment and refund anything you paid beyond it. If you move your dates at least 72 hours before pickup, you can put the 50% toward one new booking within 12 months instead.
Held on your card before pickup and released 1–3 days after the car comes back, minus any charges under your rental agreement. Ask how the release is processed and allow for your bank’s processing time; the security amount is not an all-in rental price.
How do pickup and airport or hotel delivery work?
Delivery to a hotel or other address in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach is $199 each way. MIA and FLL airport delivery is $149 each way, and Palm Beach (PBI) airport is $250 each way. Or collect the car at 2500 NW 39th St, Miami. Share the airport, arrival time and planned collection/return times in your inquiry. Confirm the handover location, timing and each delivery or collection charge in the quote; a flight arrival time is not a confirmed handover slot.
Can I drive to Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach or the Keys?
Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties are one permitted travel area. Leaving that combined area, including a Florida Keys trip, requires prior approval. All cars include 100 miles per rental day, including promotional free days; the published four-hour allowance is 50 miles. Ask the team to confirm the mileage and any additional charges for your exact rental period. An inquiry or quote is not route approval.
What should I put in an ordinary inquiry?
- Your chosen car and any alternatives, dates, pickup and return times.
- Each proposed driver’s age and license-issuing country; whether you need license/IDP or translation review.
- Your insurance situation: an existing policy to verify, uncertainty about coverage, or a request to discuss alternatives.
- Arrival airport and time, pickup/delivery preference, passengers and luggage, and any planned travel outside the three-county area.
Do not attach or paste passports, license images, insurance documents, card numbers or payment credentials into the general inquiry. The team will direct sensitive documents through its approved verification process. Complete that verification, the agreed payment and rental agreement before relying on a confirmed booking or handover.
